How it works
Area to order = lawn area × (1 + the extra for cuts). Rolls = area to order ÷ the area of one roll, rounded up to a whole roll. Pallets = rolls ÷ rolls per pallet, shown exact and rounded up, with the loose rolls beyond the last full pallet, because suppliers sell both. Cost = rolls × the price per roll you typed (a pallet price ÷ rolls per pallet gives the price per roll). Weight = the supplier’s range for a pallet, dry to wet, scaled to your rolls.
With the US starting values, a 500 sq ft lawn takes 55 rolls (1.1 (buy 2 pallets)) and a 1,000 sq ft lawn 110 rolls. In the UK a roll is about 1 m² (Rolawn, How to measure your lawn), so a 50 m² lawn with the 5% extra is 52.5 (buy 53 rolls).
The lawn area is shared: measure it once as rectangles, circles and triangles minus the beds, paths and sheds inside it, and the grass seed and fertilizer calculators use the same figure. - How much sod do I need for 500 square feet?
- With 10% extra for cuts and 10 sq ft rolls: 55 rolls, which is 1.1 (buy 2 pallets) of 50 rolls (or 1 pallet plus 5 loose rolls). Type 500 in the calculator and change the extra or the roll size to your supplier's.
- How much extra sod should I order?
- CT Sod, How many square feet of sod comes on a pallet says 5 to 10 percent for the cuts at edges, curves and obstacles; Rolawn in the UK says at least 5%. The calculator starts at 10% in the US and 5% in the UK; a plain rectangle needs less, a lawn full of curves and beds more.
- How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
- The US starting values follow CT Sod, How many square feet of sod comes on a pallet: 2 ft × 5 ft rolls of 10 sq ft, 50 to a pallet, so 500 sq ft per pallet; other farms load pallets differently and warm-season sod often comes as slabs. Type your supplier's rolls per pallet, or leave it empty if they sell by the roll.
- How many rolls of turf do I need (UK)?
- A UK roll is about 1 m² (Rolawn, How to measure your lawn), so rolls = m² × 1.05, rounded up: a 50 m² lawn is 52.5 (buy 53 rolls). Switch the region to UK / metric and type your lawn in metres.
- How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
- CT Sod, How many square feet of sod comes on a pallet gives 750 to 1,500 lb for a 500 sq ft pallet depending on moisture. The calculator scales that range to the rolls you order, so you know what the delivery truck and your back are in for; wet sod is at the top of the range.
- Does the price include delivery?
- No. The cost line is rolls × the price you typed, nothing else. Sod farms quote per square foot or per pallet plus delivery; retailers often include delivery in the pallet price. Divide a pallet price by the rolls on it to get the price per roll the calculator wants.
